2nd Grade

For many second graders, 2nd grade signals the start of being one of the “big kids” in school. The children have mastered learning “how to read” and basic number/math skills and are now ready to take on more difficult concepts. Their attention spans are increasing as is their ability to complete more difficult tasks.

In Math, second graders delve further into place value and add and subtract using regrouping. They explore fractions, skip counting as a precursor to third grade multiplication facts, and learn more about money, time, units of measure, and how to use a thermometer. Many math concepts are graphed as well. The children enjoy “math games” and using manipulatives for problem solving.

Second grade is a pivotal year in reading as the children move from having learned “to read” in Kindergarten and First Grades to becoming more fluent readers. They are challenged with longer question and written answer assignments.

Life cycles, the solar system, health topics, magnets, forces, matter, and a variety of other science related topics are eagerly explored in second grade.

Neighborhoods, the world around us, and map skills are all an integral part of Social Studies.

Second graders further develop written language skills. Their writing focuses on conveying meaning and using the 6-Traits of Good Writing to create descriptive pieces of written work. Mrs. Geiser is often heard saying, “Tell me more about that,” in writing class.

My goal is to pique second graders curiosity and challenge them to learn new vocabulary and knowledge every day!
