School Closure due to COVID-19

School Closure Statement

Good Evening. These last seven days have certainly been unprecedented in terms of planning and reacting to an ever-changing situation regarding COVID-19. We find ourselves making plans knowing that they could change at a moment’s notice. Today the Commissioner of the Nebraska Department of Education recommended for all Nebraska schools to cease normal operations by Friday, March 20th, 2020 for a minimum of two weeks.

In response to this statement, an emergency board of education meeting was held this evening. The following actions were established at the meeting:

•Effective School Closure Date- Arnold Public Schools will close beginning Thursday, March 19th with a possible reopening of Monday, April 6th. The board will reevaluate the situation on Thursday, April 2nd at 7:00PM.

•Enrichment activities will be offered through online resources or paper and pencil packets. Correspondence will take place via Schoology.

•Certified Staff Employment Plan- Time will be spent on school responsibilities at school at a minimum of Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 8:00AM-4:00PM.

•Classified Staff- Offer hours to hourly employees for cleaning and services we will be providing during closure and salaried employees will operate at a minimum of three days a week in the building from 8:00AM-4:00PM.

•Offer a daily lunch and grab n go breakfast package to students with coordinated deliveries and pick up areas during closure.

•Approve elementary student use and checkout of electronic devices during closure with a signed student loan agreement.

This certainly a lot to process at this point. As we mentioned before, this is uncharted territory, and we are planning and coordinating to the best of our efforts knowing that situations may change along the way.

We understand the impact that these decisions have on the daily lives of our students, staff, parents, and community. This is a situation we do not take lightly and we will continue to work diligently to provide the best opportunities we can given the current constraints.

We would like to thank the Arnold Board of Education for all the extra time that has been required of them these last few days. We would like to thank all our staff for their efforts and flexibility. We would like to thank the students for their patience and positive attitude as changes are made. We want to thank the parents for their efforts knowing that their daily routines are being turned upside down due to COVID-19. Finally, We would like to thank the community as a whole for your support during this difficult time. It is important that we continue to work together and lead the way as we navigate through the rough waters we find ourselves in.
